Local Kansan Quilts & Textile Art To Accompany Wandering Spirit: African Wax Prints Exhibit Information & Registration Form
October 22nd, 2019 – November 30th, 2019
We are very excited about our upcoming quilt exhibit Wandering Spirit: African Wax Prints scheduled for October 22, 2019 thru November 30, 2019. This traveling exhibit is comprised of 66 Wax Print Fabrics and 3 Wax Print dresses on dress forms and is curated by Dr. Gifty Benson and organized by ExhibitsUSA/Mid-America Arts Alliance, Kansas City, MO.
The Stauth Museum will enhance this traveling exhibit by displaying quilts, textiles or textile art created by Kansas men and women. There are so many wonderful and talented quilt and textile makers in western Kansas and this is a unique exhibit to showcase their amazing works. Since this is an exhibit about the art of batiks, all quilts or textiles that are created with or include batik in them will be highlighted in the exhibit. Traditional and nontraditional quilts as well as all types of textiles will be displayed such as: needlepoint, embroidery, tatting, knit, crochet, sewing, weaving, latch-hooking, textile art, batik, wall hangings and any other kind of textiles.
We only have space in the Special Exhibitions Gallery for 30 Kansas quilts, PLUS other various textiles. We want to make sure all ITEMS can be displayed at their best and not crowded together. For the purpose of this information and entry form, ITEM is interchanged with quilts or textiles made of knit, crochet, cross-stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, etc. or any other form of textiles or textile art. All ITEMS will be accepted into the exhibit on a first-to-notify basis so please return your COMPLETED Quilt and Textile Exhibition Information & Registration Form(s) as soon as possible. There is a limit of 1 quilt or 3 textiles per exhibitor. The ITEMS you are planning to bring cannot have been previously displayed at the Stauth Museum.
We must receive the Quilt or Textile Exhibition Information & Registration Form(s) no later than September 24, 2019. But, since they are accepted on a first-to-notify basis, the first 30 of these completed quilt forms returned to the museum will get the 30 coveted exhibit spaces. Textiles and textile art entries will not be included in the 30 spaces unless it has a sleeve and is to be hung like a quilt.
Please be as complete as possible when filling in the information so everyone can enjoy your ITEM and its history. Please fill in one Quilt or Textile Exhibition Information & Registration Form for each ITEM you would like to display, front and back. Submit your completed entry form in one of the following methods:
- Bring your completed form(s) to the Museum.
- E-mail your completed form(s) to [email protected].
- Mail your completed form(s) to the museum at PO Box 396, Montezuma KS 67867-0396.
- Download the form here, fill the form out digitally (making a form for each entry) and then submit your completed form(s) via email to [email protected].
If at all possible we would like you to attach a photograph of each ITEM as well! The deadline for returning this Information & Registration Form(s) is Tuesday, September 24, 2019.
We will need you to deliver your ITEM(S) to the Museum during the period of September 27th thru October 9th. If you want your ITEM to HANG, it must have a hanging sleeve sewn along the top edge on the back. If you feel your ITEM is too fragile to hang, we do have quilt racks so it will be folded over for display. If you need instructions for attaching a sleeve to your ITEM, please let us know and we will forward it to you. If your ITEM does not have a hanging sleeve when it is delivered to the museum, it will be displayed folded over a quilt rack or another display method. Please make sure you CIRCLE OR FILL IN the correct display method on your Registration Form…HANG, FOLD or TABLE! It is critical that we know the correct measurements of your ITEM if it is to be hung. For ITEMS to be hung, height = how long the ITEM is and width = the size of the ITEM where the hanging sleeve is sewn or hanging device attached. If your ITEM is to be displayed on a rack or table, the exact dimensions aren’t as important.
All hanging textile art ITEMS are expected to be framed or have appropriate hanging devices attached to the back. If hanging device is not sufficient to accommodate the weight of the ITEM and it falls off the wall, the Stauth Museum is not responsible for damages done to the ITEM. The exhibitor will be called to come correct the hanging problem or the ITEM will be taken out of the exhibit. Please see the Guidelines Here for other exhibit participation information.
When we receive your completed Quilt or Textile Exhibition Information & Registration Form we will call you to set up a delivery time to bring your ITEM(S) to the museum this way we won’t have everyone show up at the same time and the check-in process can go quickly and smoothly. Delivery hours will be from 10:00am-Noon and 1:00pm-5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, September 27th through October 9th. We will not be accepting any ITEMS on Sundays unless no other day can be arranged. If you are unable to bring your ITEMS at those times, special appointments for an evening delivery time may be arranged. If you have not received a call to set up your delivery after we should have received your Information & Registration Form, please call 620.846.2527 to set up your delivery time.
A SAMPLE copy of the Loan Agreement you will be required to sign when you deliver your ITEM can be found here. Please read it before you bring your ITEM for display. For legal reasons, the present owner of the quilt must sign an original Loan Agreement Form when delivering the quilt to the Museum. We will not accept any exhibit ITEMS unless the owner brings the item to the museum and signs the loan agreement in person. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and realize some quilts may not be eligible for display because of this guideline!
Please remember you will need to make arrangements to pick up your ITEMS from 10:00am-Noon and 1:00pm-5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, December 3rd through December 11th. Evening appointments may be arranged as well. We have changed our pickup policy, if the owner cannot come in person to pick up their ITEMS, they may send a representative to pick up their ITEMS. These arrangements must be pre-approved by the Director.
All ITEMS must be picked up no later than 5:00PM on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 as we do not have a place to store the quilts and we will be preparing for the next exhibition, Best In the West: The Art of Ronald Smith, Colleen Sternberger and Robin Valenzuela that will open on December 11, 2019 and be on display until January 18, 2020.
